How it’s worked out

  1. Start with your yearly income from employment.
  2. Subtract allowed deductions: retirement contributions (SSF, provident fund, CIT) up to one third of income or Rs 5,00,000, whichever is lower; life insurance premium up to Rs 40,000; health insurance premium up to Rs 20,000.
  3. Apply the slabs to what’s left. The first slab is the 1% social security tax, which is waived for SSF contributors.
  4. Women with only employment income get a 10% rebate on the tax.

This is an estimate for salaried people. Business income, allowances for remote areas, foreign income and other special rules aren’t included. Check with your employer or the Inland Revenue Department for your exact tax. For a full salary breakdown, use the salary calculator.
